Liposuction of Neck
Home Care Instructions

What Can I Expect After Surgery?

  • Drainage from the surgical sites in front of the ear will usually occur. This drainage may increase when you are up and moving around the house. Drainage may stain your clothing and your bandage. Your bandage may be hand washed and dried on low heat if it becomes stained. You should place a large towel under your head when in bed to protect your pillow.
  • Your neck will feel stiff for a while after surgery, but this will resolve with time. Slight discoloration of the skin is normal.

Pain Management After Surgery

  • You will be prescribed medications based on your health history and current medications. Please take them as prescribed.
  • DO NOT take any aspirin or medication containg aspirin, or anti-inflammatory medications such as Aleve or Advil for 7 days. Other routinely taken medications may be taken as necessary. If aspirin is prescribed by your physician, please discuss the circumstances with Dr. Sanovich. It may be desiable to continue the aspirin.
  • Use a narcotic pain reliever as needed for the first couple of days.

Wound Care For The Surgical Site

  • Elastic support that is placed the day of the procedure should not be removed other than for short periods the first 3 days after surgery. You should remove the bandage twice each day, wash your neck gently, and re-apply the bandage snug, but not so tight that it is irritating. It is very important to wear the support bandage as much as possible the next 3 weeks at night.
  • Sutures that are placed are dissolvable sutures but keep a layer of Aquaphor on the sites to help minimize scarring. You want the sites to always be moist, there will be a total of 3 small incisions.

Activity Level After Surgery

  • Avoid any strenuous physical activity for 1 week.
  • You may return to school or light duty work (non-physical labor) within a week of the surgery or as tolerated per your symptoms.
  • Although you just had surgery, we recommend you do not stay in bed while awake, to minimize the chances of leg clots.
  • Try to transfer to a chair instead and walk throughout the house. Try to be as active as possible.
  • The swelling will worsen over the next 3-4 days after surgery and is expected. The swelling will begin to subside shortly thereafter.

What Follow-Up Care Will I Receive?

  • You will have a follow up 7 days following the procedure.
  • You may also call at any time during your recovery if you have any questions or concerns.
