Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
Home Care Instructions

What Can I Expect After Surgery?

  • Facial swelling and bruising (particularly around the eyes) are normally present after browlifts, but the degree of each varies widely from patient to patient. Do not be concerned if you have more or less swelling than others who have undergone the “same” procedure. Generally swelling starts to minimize by 5-7 days. Recommendations of sleeping in a recline positions for 3-5 days will help minimize the swelling.
  • Your forehead, scalp, and other portions of your face that have been lifted and repositioned, will be slightly numb for several weeks. Sensation will then return as healing progresses. Avoid prolonged exposure to very cold temperatures.
  • You will leave the office on the day of your procedure with a head wrap which can be removed 24 hours after your procedure, most of the time a follow up appointment will be made and we will help with removal of bandages and headwraps.

Pain Management After Surgery

  • You will be prescribed medications based on your health history and current medications. Please take them as prescribed.
  • DO NOT take any aspirin or medication containg aspirin, or anti-inflammatory medications such as Aleve or Advil for 7 days. Other routinely taken medications may be taken as necessary. If aspirin is prescribed by your physician, please discuss the circumstances with Dr. Sanovich. It may be desirable to continue the aspirin.
  • Use a narcotic pain reliever as needed for the first couple of days.
  • Artifical Tears to help with relief after surgery

Activity Level After Surgery

  • Avoid any strenuous physical activity for 1 week.
  • You may return to school or light duty work (non-physical labor) within a week of the surgery or as tolerated per your symptoms.
  • Although you just had surgery, we recommend you do not stay in bed while awake, to minimize the chances of leg clots.
  • Try to transfer to a chair instead and walk throughout the house. Try to be as active as possible.
  • The swelling will worsen over the next 3-4 days after surgery and is expected. The swelling will begin to subside shortly thereafter.

Activity Level After Surgery

  • If there are no sutures, cosmetics may be applied to the lower eyelids the day after surgery. If you had upper eyelid surgery or lower eyelid skin removal, you may apply cosmetics one day after our office has removed the sutures.
  • Protect your facial skin from excessive sun exposure for one months after surgery. Use sunscreen whenever prolonged sun exposure is anticipated.

Follow-Up Care

We will follow up in 5-7 days to remove sutures.
