Skin Care Procedures  About Rosacea
FotoFacial is Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, and is the best treatment available for rosacea. It will produce dramatic improvement in all aspects of the problem.
Rosacea is a chronic disease that affects over 11 million Americans. It is especially prevalent in people with fair skin and often starts with easy flushing and blushing. These episodes of flushing progress to the development of prominent visible blood vessels. There are people who only have this component of the disease, and people who have other components such as pimples and acne-like breakouts.
It is believed that some people have a genetic predisposition to developing it as tends to run in families. Extremes of weather, sun exposure and heat cause flair-ups of this disease, however, weather is not the only factor. Various foods, such as red wine and chocolate, seem to aggravate the problem.
During our first examination we often review with patients the various causes of Rosacea and the trigger mechanisms. Very often perimenopausal women will develop Rosacea for the first time as a result of hormonal changes. Often, family history will indicate that Rosacea has been seen in most of the family members as they approach their 30's and 40's. Although women tend to have Rosacea more often than men, men who develop it are often plagued with a component of the disease called rhinophyma, which is thickening of the skin at the tip of the nose. This produces a red, bulbous, unattractive nasal tip.

Many relatively ineffective treatments for Rosacea have been used over the years. They include topical antibacterial agents, low strength cortisone, and oral antibacterial agents. Redness and flushing are the most difficult components of the disease to control.

Happily, we have seen remarkable reduction of redness and flushing in rosacea patients using FotoFacial Intense Pulsed Light. The light source is applied to the facial skin for two to five treatments at three to four week intervals. There is virtually no downtime, however, slight redness may be present for up to 24 hours. The acne-like eruptions of Rosacea are usually well controlled with FotoFacial and glycolic acid skin care products. FotoFacial will also reduce wrinkles and abnormal pigmentation, and produce impressive improvements in skin texture by reducing pore size and by tightening the skin.

Since the disease is chronic, repeated treatments may be necessary. After the desired effect is achieved, many of our patients come once or twice a year for maintenance treatments.
