| Recovery from Surgery and Anesthesia |
Today, the anesthetic drugs we use in our surgery center wear off so quickly that patients are awake, alert and ready to go home shortly after surgery. They are usually able to care for themselves at home without difficulty. Almost everyone who is sedated for surgery will want to have a friend drive them home and make sure they are secure. Occasionally, a patient having a short procedure may remain in our office until they are fully recovered, so they may be permitted to have a taxi drive them home.
We discuss the post-operative process in detail with all of our patients and help them to plan the most effective, comfortable and rapid recovery. Almost all patients have someone to assist them and prefer to recover at home. For these patients, some simple preparations at home before surgery will simplify the recovery process.
Filling all prescriptions ahead of time, reading the written home care instructions several times, and having the suggested medical supplies and food on hand, will help to ensure a comfort and relaxed recovery. Some patients prefer to begin their recovery with a nurse at home. There are temporary nursing services that will provide partial or around the clock nursing assistance for you at home. We can help you determine if this would be desirable for your particular situation.
