CO2 Laser is the Gold Standard

The CO2 laser can be used to produce a light, rapidly healing treatment with moderate improvement, up to a deep, slower healing treatment that will produce dramatic improvement, or anything in between. Some patients only need a mild to moderate intensity treatment, and others need a more aggressive treatment. The CO2 laser covers all possibilities better than any other technology.

For the past ten years, CO2 lasers lave been the gold standard for facial skin rejuvenation.  These lasers can dramatically improve almost any skin problem related to pigmentation, scars, acne, sun damage and aging changes.  They can remove fine to moderately deep lines and scars, even-out color irregularities, improve texture, tighten the skin, and increase skin elasticity to a more youthful level.

Ablative CO2 Laser Treatment

There are two types of CO2 skin rejuvenation approaches.  The traditional fully ablative approach involves vaporizing the entire skin surface to stimulate the growth of a whole new skin surface. This is the more aggressive treatment, with the longest recovery time, but it produces the best result.  Because it can take more than a week to heal, and several weeks to look good, many patients look for something with a shorter down time.

The Fractional CO2 Laser Treatment

The Fractional CO2 Laser approach treats only a fraction of the skin surface area, so the after-treatment care and recovery time are greatly reduced. It produces a similar type of rejuvenation, but there is less overall improvement with one treatment than the ablative approach. The percentage of the skin surface treated can be adjusted to meet individual patient’s goals.  The greater the percentage of skin treated, the better the results, but the longer the down time. If two or more light treatments are performed, they may a result equal to one deeper treatment.

By adjusting the fractional laser depth and coverage area, a patient can select the perfect treatment for them.  With a light treatment, it will only take a few days to recover.  A deeper treatment might keep you out of work for a week.  When fractional laser treatment is performed at the same time as a facelift, or other surgical procedure, there is no increase in overall healing time.  While recovering from one procedure, you are recovering from the laser.

With Fractional CO2 treatment, a scanner creates a grid pattern of tiny pulses of light energy on the skin. Each pulse delivers a column of energy that can reach down to the skin’s dermal layer. This stimulates the natural regeneration of collagen. Also, because the laser beam covers only a fraction of the skin surface, small areas of untreated skin will be left between the treated spots.  These untreated areas help the skin heal more rapidly.

Fractional CO2 Laser is the “Easy” Gold Standard

Dr. McBride uses the Sandstone Medical Matrix CO2fractional laser system.  It is designed to give Dr. McBride precise control over the intensity of each treatment. Each individual treatment can be tailored to a specific need and allotted down time.  It is easy-to-use, it requires minimal anesthesia, and most importantly, it offers great results, and a short recovery compared with traditional ablative (full surface area) skin resurfacing.  Fractional CO2 laser can be used on a wide range of skin types.  Unlike traditional CO2resurfacing, fractional resurfacing can be used on the neck, chest and hands.

Fractional CO2 laser treatments can be performed under topical anesthesia, light sedation, or general anesthesia.  Most patients look and feel like they have a mild sunburn that lasts for several days after treatment.  This is easily controlled with anti-inflammatory drugs and cold compresses.  Patients can usually apply make-up 48 hours after treatment, and they are usually completely healed within a week.

How Lasers Work

Computer controlled lasers emit a powerful beam of light that can be used to precisely remove a superficial layer of skin. The surface cells are vaporized, leaving a smooth healthy surface for young new cells to grow over. The laser removes the old, rough surface cells and stimulates the deeper layers of skin to grow thicker, thus filling in the depressions in the skin and creating a smoother surface. Dr. McBride owns the latest generation of lasers, which gives him the most precision and produces faster healing and better results.

Lasers are effective for rejuvenating sun-damaged skin, smoothing acne scarring, eliminating age spots and discolorations, and reducing facial scars and wrinkles. The laser is particularly effective in removing vertical lines in the upper and lower lips, lines at the corners of the mouth, and crow’s-feet. These are areas that are not effectively improved with a facelift. Therefore combining the laser with a facelift or other procedures, such as fat transfer or fillers, will provide a result that is far better than either procedure alone.

Recuperation from Laser Skin Rejuvenation

It takes several days for the skin to heal after laser surgery. A moist dressing, such as 2nd Skin, protects the healing tissue and keeps it very comfortable. With our proven home care approach you should have no pain. Heavy moisturizers are used to speed healing. After six to eight days, makeup can be applied.

The skin stays pink with a healthy glow for about two months. The pink color represents increased blood flow in the skin, which leads to thickening of the deeper layer and a smoother final result. Sunscreens should be used daily to protect the skin from sun irritation.
